Tips to Winterize Your Lawn Mower

After a gorgeous start to fall, it looks like the regular seasonal temperatures are setting in and snowfall is not far away. As you prepare to put your lawn mower to rest for the Winter it is a good idea to do some general maintenance and winterization before storing it away.

Riding lawn mowers differ in maintenance requirements but below are some general winterization tips that apply to all mowers.

    • Give your lawn mower a good wash.
    • Check the underside of the mower deck and clean out all lawn clippings and debris.
    • Change the engine oil and filter. Remove and clean or replace the air and fuel filters.
    • Check the belts for deterioration. Repair or replace any worn or damaged parts. Tighten loose hardware.
    • Remove or disconnect spark plugs.
    • Fill your fuel tank to 95% full, add fuel stabilizer and run for 5 minutes to cycle through the carburetor and fuel lines. Fuel stabilizer helps the fuel not to become spoiled for long periods of non-use.
    • Remove battery and store it in a cool dry place where it will not freeze.
    • Store mower in a dry, protected place. If mower is stored outside we recommend putting a waterproof cover over it.
